A day in the garden…

What do you do when you have a whole weekend off? You spend it shovelling manure of course! We had planned a busy couple of days in the garden to make a dent on getting it ready for the year ahead. Rain cancelled play on the Sunday but thankfully Saturday was dry enough to allow us to weed and continue moving that manure onto the vegetable beds. So far I’m really pleased with our progess, it’s hard work but it’s going to worth it!

The garlic is growing beautifully and with one more row than last year I’m expecting a bumper crop. Which would be amazing as we really love garlic in this household! Another happy sight in the garden are the rhubarb crowns which are starting to show signs of life. This will be the first year we’re officially allowed to harvest from them so I’m very excited about that, plus they should be loving all the manure we’ve given them.

When the rain did finally appear I went to seek sanctuary in the polytunnel to sow the first of this years seeds. I wasn’t complaining, after having quite a large break from gardening my back was starting to protest so I was thankful for the sit down. I sowed a whole root trainer tray of sweet peas along with quite a few cut flowers; Yarrow, Strawflowers, Cornflower and Feverfew. I’ve popped them into our heated propagator for a little heat to help them germinate so fingers crossed! Next on the list are the tomatoes, cucumber, sweet peppers and leeks. There’s also broad beans which need direct sowing, potatoes to chit and onion sets to plant into modules… A busy but very exciting time of year!
