January in the garden

We had a huge delivery of farm manure last week and it’s been patiently waiting on our driveway like a sore thumb. So this weekend we made a start on moving some of it and prepping the beds ready for the year ahead. Thankfully the sun decided to shine on Saturday and we managed a whole day in the garden, which was glorious!

Whilst my Dad starting moving the manure I was busy removing the perennial weeds from the beds and removing last years crops which were past it. Last year we grew three rows of leeks and we were working our way through nicely them when the snow hit and finished them off… So when I dug them I sorted the perfectly usuable ones to one side so we could make some chicken pie filling and potato and leek soup. However, next year we’ve decided to only grow 2 rows so we can fit more onions in, which not only store better but we use more of them throughout the year.

The girls are absolutely loving life now that they are allowed to free range in the main kitchen garden. And they are in their absolute element when I’m digging or weeding, despite getting in the way and making the job last longer than it needed to be! I often see them from the kitchen window when I’m washing up happily foraging for worms and insects and it never fails to make me smile.

In other news… I went and filmed a shed vlog at the weekend, a whole 30 minutes of me rambling in the shed about the garden and what I’ve been up to since the last video back in May. However, for some strange reason I feel very nervous and reluctant to actually post it on Youtube. I’m pretty sure my spark hasn’t quite returned yet and maybe I’m still trying to find the girl that I used to be. I’m hoping that some much needed garden time will bring her back, re-ignite that confidence and the spark will shine brighter.
