The Cut Flower Patch

One of this years big projects… and I stress the ‘one’ part because we have quite a few projects on the go at the moment… is creating a dedicated cut flower patch. Two beds in fact, and I am one very excited gardener! After we decided on buying a smaller greenhouse and suddenly having some spare garden, we came up with the plan to have a space to grow flowers. Because the more flowers the better right? So I got my big girl gardener pants on and got to work measuring out the 2 metre by 5 metre beds, drawing up plans, making lists of flowers to grow and generally getting carried away with all my dreams…

The first thing to do was to remove the turf so we could get to the good stuff, so out came the trusty turfing spade and one sunny morning I got to work… 5 hours later and I was a broken girl. Despite the aching back, blisters and torn hands, I was so proud of myself and it felt incredible to see the structure of the new beds coming to life.

After a day or two resting my back I came back out with the fork and dug over one of the beds ready for planting. This bed will have the bulbs/perennials and I have Gladioli that need planting out as soon as possible, which is why I wanted to tackle it first. The other bed will be mainly annuals so there’s not so much of a rush as I have yet to sow the seeds. Plus I’ve made a promise to my boyfriend that we will work on this bed together and he’s off next week, so we have a few days planned in the garden together and I couldn’t be more excited.

All this sunshine and time in the garden has done wonders for my mental health and I feel like my gardening bug has well and truly returned. I’m back to being all excited about spending time outside, which is all thanks to the little cut flower patch. It’s given me that much need kick and purpose that I needed with the extra bonus of having homegrown flowers too.

The girls have also been loving the sunshine and freedom, there’s still no flock down here so they still have full run of the kitchen garden and all the worms! The next big job will be digging in all that manure, so I’ll give my back another little rest before starting that…
